Admission Trends for Out-of-State Students at the University of California Schools
Here are highlights of the trends from last year’s admissions cycle to guide out-of-state students applying to the University of California schools (UCs).
UCs with Increased Out-of-State Admissions
UC Irvine had a substantial rise in admissions for out-of-state students, climbing from 37% to 47%.
Showing a respectable increase this year as well as boasting the highest percentage admission rate is UC Santa Cruz, with a rise in out-of-state acceptances from 71% to 81%.
UC Santa Barbara’s out-of-state acceptances rose from 29% to 33%.
At UC Davis, non-resident applicants experienced a slight rise in admissions rates from 60% to 61%.
At UC Merced, out-of-state admissions increased from 79% to 81%. However, Merced has very low numbers of out-of-state students.
UCs with Steady Out-of-State Admissions Rates
Both UCLA and San Diego have retained steady out-of-state admissions rates of 8.6 % and 32%, respectively.
Out-of-State Admissions Decreased
Berkeley experienced a slight drop in non-residential admissions to 7.8%.
Riverside also decreased slightly but still offered admission to 87% of out-of-state applicants. Like Merced, Riverside has relatively low numbers of non-resident students attending.
UCs with Higher Admission Rates for Out-of-State than Resident Applicants
Davis, Irvine, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz all offer admissions rates advantages for non-resident applicants.
Applying to the UCs
The UCs are not on the Common App and require completion of the UC Application. This one application allows students to choose which of the 9 campuses to apply to. The deadline for the UC Application is November 30th and requires an extended activities list and short essay answers to 4 of 8 Personal Insight Questions. The word limit for each essay is 350 words.
