Changes to ACT Test
Changes to the ACT test were announced earlier this week. They include:
The science section will now be optional. Like the writing section, students can choose to take the test with or without science.
The Composite score will be the average of the reading, writing, and math sections.
The test will be shorter. The core test (reading, writing, and math) will be two hours rather than three, with 44 fewer questions and shorter reading passages.
Students can opt to take the test online or on paper.
These changes will roll out at national test centers in spring of 2025 and for school-day testing in spring of 2026.
For now, students planning to apply to selective colleges should continue preparing for the science section if they are taking the ACT. Even though the proposed changes are scheduled to go into effect spring of 2025, colleges may continue to require submission of a science section score. Virtually no selective colleges require the ACT with writing for the upcoming admissions cycle.
