Parent Checklist for the Summer Before Your Child Leaves for College
If your child is headed to college this fall, there are some items to think about this summer.
Make sure your child has signed up for a college email and that they check it regularly. There may be placement tests or health forms to complete over the summer.
Does your child’s college offer any pre-orientation trips for students before classes start? If yes, talk to your child about whether they want to attend. These trips can be a great way for new students to meet each other.
If your child has learning differences, help your child access the disabilities services office for their college and fill out the required information to receive similar accommodations in college. Many students put this off, but it is a good idea to be proactive so that they begin their college career with the accommodations that have helped them in high school.
Discuss finances with your child. Consider helping them open their own bank account and get their own debit or credit card to use while at college. It is often a good idea for students to start building their own credit history while in school.
Discuss voting with your child and whether they want to register to vote in the state where they will be attending college or in their home state.
Once your child turns 18, they are legally considered an adult. Discuss whether they are willing to sign legal forms to allow you access to their medical or educational information. These legal forms differ between states, and companies like Mama Bear Legal Forms will create forms for different states. Consider having your child sign one set for the state where they will attend college and one for your home state.
