Things for Parents to Consider When Sending a Student to College
Some things to talk to your child about before they go away to college.
1. Finances
Decide whether and how much of an allowance to give them. Discuss how to budget their money. Help them get a credit card in their name to develop a credit history.
2. Healthcare
Help students figure out health services and mental health resources at school. Make sure they know the closest ER. Pick a pharmacy where they will fill prescriptions.
3. Accommodations
If your child receives accommodations at school, make sure that they register or complete the process for college services. Don’t wait until midterm grades come in!
4. Legal
At 18, your child is no longer a minor. Consult with an advisor about whether you want your child to sign certain forms to give you access to their medical and other information.
5. Resources/Visits
Join the college parents’ Facebook group or parents’ club. They are great resources. If you are planning to attend parents’ weekend, make hotel and flight reservations (if necessary). Check if any events require tickets or a reservation.
