Tips to Navigate Your College Search as an LGBTQIA+ Student

It’s essential for all high schoolers to choose a college that is the right fit. If you are a member of LGBTQIA+, it’s even more important to make sure you will be spending your college years in a community that is inclusive and supportive. Finding the right college fit as an LGBTQIA+ student includes researching the college and its policies and considering the community to understand state and local laws. Here are some tips to help your college search.

  1. Research LGBTQIA+ Friendly Colleges

Resources such as College Pride offers a comprehensive list of the best colleges and universities for queer students. It’s important that the school you attend has resources and systems in place to support you. Here is an article about a few colleges that are doing great things for the LGBTQIA+ community.

  2. Evaluate the School’s Policies

When selecting a college, it’s important to review its policies including non-discrimination policies, gender-neutral housing options, and inclusive healthcare (which includes mental health services).

  3. Connect With the Community

Check out the clubs and organizations at each college that focus on the LGBTQIA+ community. Follow the social media accounts of groups in the local area and at the college. Connect with fellow LGBTQIA+ community members and students to learn about their experiences and the level of support they receive.

  4. Visit the Campus

While virtual tours are great, visiting a college in person can give you the opportunity to meet with admissions reps (or other administrators) and current students to ask detailed questions about student life.

  5. Consider The Location

Research the legislation in the state where the college is located. Consider whether you feel protected and that you can receive affirming healthcare. Erin In The Morning provides a monthly Anti-Trans Legislative Risk Map to help educate queer people on the safest states to reside and visit. Here is an article about the experience of going to college in a red state.

Because the legislation is rapidly changing, I encourage you to regularly review the state policies for colleges you are considering. Finding a college that accepts and supports your identity is a necessary factor for a fulfilling educational experience.
